May 7 , 2007 - Finally!!!

|
Well, after weeks of hearing about all the good fishing, I finally got to get out and enjoy some of the action. I was joined this day by friends, Dan and John. After much bragging about the great fishing on a private lake in Brooklyn, John decided to see for himself if the lake was as good as advertised. Much to my surprise, the fish were doing exactly as I expected. We immediately went to the backs of the pockets and began to catch fish immediately. I was throwing a jig, while Dan was throwing a crankbait and John a spinnerbait. Dan wasted no time with the crankbait catching 3 fish within about 10 minutes. After a little lul, John caught what was probably the biggest fish of the day, slow rolling a white spinnerbait. The solid four pounder engulfed the spinnerbait but ended up being the only keeper caught in this area. Water temps were around 43 degrees, so we decided to look for warmer water. We idled back into a small cove and found water temps around 46. This was key, I picked up a nice 3 pounder followed by several 2 to2 1/2 pounders. Shortly, John and Dan were tying on jigs. We went on to catch 10 to 12 fish out of this small area. We spent the rest of the day motoring to the backs of coves and bays where we would always catch several fish schooled up, but, the action was short lived. We would only catch 3 or 4 before the bite stopped. We fished about 4 hours and decided to call it an early day, as we idled back into the small bay where we launched, I noticed the water was a few degrees warmer and decided to give this a try. Good decision! As we caught about 15 to 20 fish in a 100 yd stretch with about a 3 pound average. The majority of the fish were caught on jigs, but Dan did manage to get several on a crank. The day ended with me making a last cast onto the ramp that we launched out of, that resulted in my biggest fish of the day ( 4 pounds), I decided it would end with this fish and laid my rod down. A great ending to a good day! While we definitely had one of my slower days on this lake, we managed to catch about 30 keepers with our best 5 around 18 pounds. The keys to the day were the warmer water and baitfish. Our best areas were loaded with bluegill and crappie. We saw several docks that had literally hundreds of crappie around them. The fish was where they were supposed to be and doing what they were supposed to do (eating).
I love it when a plan comes together!!
